We have also highlighted a few random ICU Strong Stories of the Month from each ICU unit that submitted stories - please read and enjoy!

10MICU - Kailea Martin, a nurse who recently completed orientation, received Kudos from our stroke team: "Stroke Education was started in a timely manner and is individualized based on assessed needs and goals of the patient.  Please extend our gratitude to these individuals not only for improving our compliance rates, but more importantly, our patient outcomes."  Way to go, Kailea!!

8 CST ICU - Shout out to the 8 CST ICU team for caring for a very complex and critically injured trauma patient.  He required a lot of care, some of which cardiac nurses are not exposed to in their daily job, and they provided excellent care.  I know how nerve racking it can be caring for a patient from a population that is not your specialty, so great job 8 CST ICU!

9 CST ICU - Destiny---you were not fazed by the challenging roller coaster of patient acuity changes, abrupt physician requests, meticulous monitoring and corresponding medication management, or the physical/psychological demands of the assignment.  You knew and utilized your resources, maintained a well-organized (and stocked) room, and narrowed your focus on providing the absolute best care to a patient (and her family) during such a delicate time.

9 MTN ICU - I just wanted to take a minute to shout out Michaela S, Caroline L and Meg K for precepting nonstop on nights.  I know you all haven’t had many breaks in between orientees, but you continue to stay committed to their success and getting people onboarded!  Thank you for your efforts, they do not go unnoticed!

9 SICU - Morgan Neily receptionist on 9 SICU saved a patient from a fall!!  She recognized that the patient was getting out of bed and reached out to other team members who were distracted by an extremely busy unit.  The team was able to respond and help the patient safely to the bedside commode.  Great job Morgan!!

PICU - Wonderful job by our PICU team yesterday lead by Dr. Powel with a critically ill pt that arrived and later passed away.  Alexis, Maddie, Madison, Meghan, Jamie, and Taylor floating were incredible managing everything that was happening, along with getting another patient down to MRI at the same time.  Everyone worked together in sync to get the patient what they needed, along with continuously checking on each other and making sure staff were able to take a moment away.  Shout out to the peds floor staff for coming back and checking and helping when the code was called.  We appreciate you making sure everything was under control.  Yesterday was a very rough day, but we held each other through it, and in turn were able to support a family during one of the most difficult times in their life.  So proud of our team!

PICU - Yesterday was a tough day that started with a transfer patient coding shortly after arrival and ended with withdrawing care by the end of the shift.  It was all-hands-on-deck!  The staff worked as a team, giving each other breaks, helping each other and giving this family special attention.  As I said goodbye to the family that evening, the grandmother, who happens to be a NP in Princeton WV Community Hospital, commented on the kind, excellent care they had received.

8 MTN ICU - Huge shoutout to Taylor, Thomas, Britney M, and Cody!!!  Their poster "Empowering Frontline Nurses: Implementation of a Unit Based Quality Council to Improve ICU Quality Metrics" WON the Nurses Week People's Choice Award for 2026!!!  The Quality Council has done so much work to meaningfully improve our patient outcomes, and it was all displayed on the poster.  The poster will be displayed on Inside Carilion and in the next Within REACH publication!!  I'm so proud!
