First Sacroiliac Joint Fusion Procedure in NRV
With the addition of Neurosurgery at Carilion Clinic New River Valley Medical Center, Neurosurgeon Vaibhav Patel, M.D., and team were the first surgical specialty in the region to perform a Minimally Invasive Sacroiliac Joint Fusion. The procedure involves a small incision to insert titanium implants across the sacroiliac joint linking the iliac bone, or pelvis, to the sacrum, the lowest part of the spine above the tailbone. Patients experience quicker recovery with fewer complications than traditional sacroiliac joint fusion. Offering neurosurgical procedures in the NRV increases access to care in our community.
