"Having the appropriate resources, expertise, and skills available to provide high quality care during emergent situations is essential to ensuring positive outcomes for our patients. Vincente and Clinical Admin helped to facilitate the care of a patient during which gaps were identified in obtaining the necessary resources to intubate a patient. Namely, reaching a provider able to intubate the patient. Thanks to their reporting of this incident, a full review of the event was conducted between CAPS Patient Safety Team, CVI Quality, OR Quality, and Anesthesia leading to the development of a new escalation pathway for when the on-call Anesthesia Provider is not immediately available.
If there is no response from the anesthesia phone for critical needs:
- Next Step: Contact the OR Coordinator/Front Desk to get connected (540-981-7244).
- If unsuccessful and the patient remains in critical need of airway: Trigger an Airway Alert, per protocol.
Their reporting resulted in meaningful action items to eliminate similar events in the future and protect our patients from harm. Great job, Vincente!"
