Courageous Commitment!!!

It was mid-morning on April 28, 2020 when a vehicle drove erratically into the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital ED parking lot.  A citizen exited the vehicle running hastily into the hospital, informing awaiting staff members that her father was outside unresponsive.  RN Katherine "Katie" Kirby was working the Triage desk and overheard the call for help.  In the blink of an eye Katie raced outside in full stride, ripping off her face shield as she approached the vehicle where the unresponsive male subject was waiting.  Katie did a quick assessment as she single-handedly removed the subject out from the vehicle and gently laid him down onto the sidewalk, then she immediately initiated CPR.  Approximately (25) twenty-five chest compressions later and the male subject's face revealed life once again.  Immediately following Katie's courageous performance, the ED Cardiac Team rushed to the scene and transported the now responsive male subject to the ED.  We are all so fortunate and blessed to have so many courageous and highly trained staff members, like RN Katie Kirby, here at Carilion committed to step up and answer that unexpected call when tragedy strikes.
