Congratulations to Michele Berry RN IV upon her retirement after 30 years with Carilion ! Michele is a dedicated professional with a distinguished career in nursing. Her passion for quality and excellence have been felt throughout Carilion.
Michele has worked in CARES/Pre- Surgical Testing since 1999. She played an integral role in the transition of CARES from CRMH to the current location at Crystal Springs Medical Building. During her years of service in CARES, Michele served as unit preceptor and RISK Team Lead. In 2009, Michele worked closely with Dr. Sandy Fogel, former manager, Brenda Gilliam, and a large multi-disciplinary team to develop a CARES/ORS quality improvement program to address surgical risks preoperatively.
This RISK program has been recognized both within Carilion and nationally.
- Carilion VIP Quality award in 2011
- A poster presentation at the American Society of Perianesthesia Nursing’s National Conference in Seattle, Washington
- A poster presentation at the Healthcare Quality Conference in San Antonio, Texas and won second place out of 75 entries
- Joint Commission recognized the RISK program and put it in their library of quality programs
- Poster was accepted and presented at the VNA Conference in November 2017
As a co-worker and a friend, Michele embodies Carilion values . She has served as an invaluable mentor to many. Her work has improved care for thousands of patients in their perioperative care.
