CNRV and CRMH successfully attain renewed Maternity Care Blue Distinction Center recognition

Earlier this year Carilion Women’s submitted surveys to the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program for the triennial renewal of Maternity Care Blue Distinction Center (BDC) status.  Blue Distinction is a quality excellence designation awarded by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) that recognizes maternity hospitals demonstrating commitment to delivering high quality care.  Like many quality ratings programs the survey includes outcomes data, however the Blue Distinction Center application is unique in the quantity of structural and process excellence standards it includes.  Blue Distinction Maternity Care includes review of the maternal quality improvement program, safety bundle elements, health equity, drills and simulations for adverse events, and involvement in state perinatal quality collaboratives.  

CNRV and CRMH maternity care have held Blue Distinction status since 2017 and we are happy to announce that Blue Distinction eligibility has been renewed!  This multifaceted evaluation of Carilion’s maternity care reflects the hard work and dedication of frontline, clinical teams, leaders, and support services throughout Women’s.

For this cycle CRMH also qualified for the cost efficiency recognition identified by ‘BDC+’ that is based on an analysis of claims data with adjustments for geography and clinical characteristics of patients that have a measurable and predictable impact on costs.  Beginning in 2024 the BCBS website Blue Distinction Center Facility Finder | Blue Cross Blue Shield (bcbs.com) will be updated to reflect this additional recognition.
