Lori Compton, one of Orthopaedic's Advice Line Nurses, had an unsuspecting phone call with a simple medication question. Lori began to ask probing questions to learn the underlying desire for changing the dosage of the medication.  After thorough triage she learned the patient had multiple syncopal episodes without any prior concerning history. Lori immediately identified the need for further assessment even though the patient attributed her symptoms to her medication question. Lori urged the patient to be seen at the Emergency Department and the patient was reluctant and was not assuring she would go. Lori went to contact her back as a follow up call to check in the same day and discovered that the patient had indeed heeded her advice and had went to the local ED and had labs concerning for heart damage and was receiving treatment and being transferred to a larger facility. Thank you Lori for really listening to the cues and giving advice that absolutely made a difference for the patient!
