Calm under Pressure
I would like to recognize FP Christiansburg for staying calm under a very stressful situation and working as a TEAM during an emergency in the office.
A new mother called our clinic to bring her child in who was d/c from RMH and needed a FU. The scheduler scheduled the child for that morning. The newborn was on the Low-Risk call list and the nurse was calling to check on him when she found out they had an appointment and was in the parking lot. They were told to come on in. The newborn was brought into the office and during the weigh in was noticed by the nurse to be declining quickly immediately they obtained his O2 which was 80%. The clinician was alerted immediately and the newborn continued to decline. The team worked together to call 911, get O2 and monitor the patient and prepare themselves for next steps which they believed would be CPR, all while remaining calm in front of the scared parents. This was all being handled so calmly that some in the clinic had no idea that something was going on. The clinician educated the parents on what was next and what questions to ask as she advocated for the patient to be taken to RMH. Had this team not worked together so efficiently and quickly, there may have been a different outcome.
I am so proud to be a part of this caring TEAM, and I just wanted to give them a shout-out for their hard work, Courage and Collaboration in the care of our patients!
