Bee award for Rockbridge County High School Athletic Trainer

Congratulations to Courtney Simpkins, ATC, Certified Athletic Trainer at Rockbridge County High School, with the Department of Orthopaedics, for winning the Bee Award!

Per the Bee nomination,

During a lacrosse game, a player on the opposing team was hit in the midsection during a game.  Courtney ran to the field and provided care to the student athlete for about 7-10 minutes. She immediately brought him to the sideline and started providing further medical care. Once she diagnosed the student, she called his parents and advised them of the situation. The parents were not at the game and Courtney spoke to them via phone. Everyone agreed that we needed to activate our emergency action plan and Courtney directed the operation. The Rescue Squad was called and the student was transported to Carilion Rockbridge hospital. During a very busy and scary time, Courtney led us through the entire event. After the game had ended, Courtney traveled to the hospital to check on the player. She was then notified by parents that he had been transported to Roanoke for further testing. I am happy to report the young man is scheduled to make a full recovery. We have also received many messages and phone calls from the other school applauding the way Courtney handled the situation.
