Appreciation for our Trauma Registrars!

For hospitals around the world, data and databases are the keys to improving processes, patient outcomes, and gaining a better understanding of the needs and experiences of one’s community. To keep track of this data registries are used both at a facility, state, national, and sometimes even worldwide level.

Though certain disease processes like cancer or treatment options like bone marrow matches typically come to mind when the topic of a registry is brought up, trauma data is actually tracked through state and national registries. The use of these trauma registries has played a significant role in driving down the death and disability rates from various injuries.

So, who is responsible for the tracking of this data? Those would be our talented group of trauma registrars. The Carilion System contains two trauma centers: Carilion New River Valley (CNRV) a level 3 center and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center.

Between the two centers, we employ 14 trauma registrars who all have varying backgrounds in healthcare, including nursing, paramedics, EMTs, and other patient care roles. This allows them the skills and knowledge base to extrapolate data effectively and accurately to help drive our process improvement, prevention efforts, and overall patient care.
