Who Are Our New Residents and Fellows?

Our Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency and fellowship programs are gaining national recognition, with ties to Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, and a unique mentorship between medical students and residents.

And the programs are growing! This year, we added two new fellowships—Surgery Critical Care and Hand Surgery. In addition, two new residents joined the six-year Plastic Surgery program, so we now have trainees in all six years; we will celebrate our first graduate from the program this year.

Once again, we also welcome eight residents funded through the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS). Our GME programs were awarded these slots in a competitive grant application with other GME programs in the state. The hope is that some of these residents will stay in Virginia and serve our communities in the Commonwealth.

So, who are our new residents and fellows? They are a diverse group, in order to meet the needs of our patient population, and with our growing reputation, they include more graduates from our state than ever before.

After two weeks of intensive orientation training, 101 new medical residents and fellows are starting their rotations at hospitals and physician offices across our organization this week.

Imagine being in a new location, without family and friends—it's the beginning of an experience our new residents and fellows will never forget! Be sure to make them feel welcome and offer help whenever possible, if you pass them in the halls or work with them.

They will be learning a lot about Carilion, our community and, of course, their specialties in the coming weeks. And we want to get to know them, too!
