We’re partnering with Riverdale’s developer to create our proposed new Physical Rehabilitation Hospital in Roanoke

Following our early April announcement, we have submitted a Certificate of Public Need application to the Commonwealth of Virginia for a proposed inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital in Roanoke.

Carilion has proposed partnering with local real estate developers Joe Thompson and Ed Walker, who will acquire financing to develop and construct the hospital on the western portion of the Riverdale property in Southeast Roanoke. Their development company plans to work with local lenders and contractors to build the facility, which they will then lease to Carilion. The proposed hospital would be on the western portion of the Riverdale property with easy access to 9th Street, S.E., and plenty of parking.

As a reminder, the proposed 50-bed hospital would be established by relocating 34 medical rehabilitation beds from Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital and adding 16 beds. Additional hospital details and our plans for CRCH continue to be finalized.

The COPN process takes time, and we’ll share more details as they become available. If the process goes smoothly, the proposed hospital could open as early as late 2026.

Ed Walker and his colleagues have spent many years redeveloping buildings and property in Roanoke. Joe Thompson has spent similar time leading successful new construction projects and serving as a real estate consultant in the Roanoke region. Riverdale – where our proposed physical inpatient rehabilitation hospital is planned – is Thompson and Walker’s most recent effort to create new construction and repurpose historic properties.
