We're One of Fortune Magazine's "Most Innovative Companies" Two Years in a Row

Our organization has once again been named one of America's Most Innovative Companies by Fortune magazine. This is the second consecutive year we've received the honor. 

We are the only health care system in Virginia on the list—and one of only 44 hospitals and health care systems across the country—to receive the honor. We rank #122 on the list, up from #140 last year.

Fortune compiled the list of 200 companies, down from 300 companies last year, with market research that included surveys of employees, management consultants, patent attorneys, recruiters and human resources experts. Surveys addressed how companies spark innovation through research and development, product invention, process streamlining and collaborative and thoughtful leadership

The most innovative organizations were selected for “transforming industries from the inside out.”

Fortune worked with data company Statista to evaluate companies from mid-September through late November 2023. Their ranking is based on a methodology resulting in scores in three categories: 

• Product innovation: a company's products and services, covering attractiveness, design, usability, uniqueness and other criteria.
• Process innovation: an organization's processes, from sourcing and production to marketing, sales and support.
• Innovation culture: the extent to which a company fosters the spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity internally and allows ideas to be implemented. Carilion Clinic Innovation is one way we support our employees who have ideas about how to improve how we care for our patients.
