Updates to Our Social Media Policy

Submitted by allauricella on

When we’re on social media, we are all representatives of Carilion. That’s why we have a Social Media and Online Activity Policy[link to policy] to help guide us as we make sure that our online interactions with others reflect our organization’s values.

Our organization takes inappropriate employee social media activity very seriously. The reason is that the consequences can be very serious for our organization. Inappropriate employee social media activity can:

  •  Open us up to lawsuits
  • Put us out of compliance with rules and laws
  • Damage our confidentiality, reputation and brand

With the help of our Legal and Marketing/Communications teams, our Human Resources team has updated the Social Media policy to make our organization’s expectations for employee social media activity clear.

Policy Overview

It's important that we all take the time to look over the full Social Media policy[link to policy] and make sure we understand it. Here’s an overview of what the policy includes:

  • It defines the requirements of employees when expressing themselves, and the rights of patients, employees and others
  • It lists additional policies that employees should be aware of when active on social media
  • It explains how Carilion expects employees to behave during social media interactions when self-identifying as a Carilion employee, or in situations where it is possible to be identified as a Carilion employee
  • It describes the types of social media comments expressly prohibited by Carilion
  • It states that Carilion will respect employee rights on social media, and describes requirements that Carilion managers or others cannot make of employees
  • It explains what Carilion reserves the right do with or to employee activities on the company’s IT resources and communication systems
  • It describes the potential consequences for employees who do not follow the policy

Here to Help

Social media offers great opportunities to connect with our community, share helpful information and highlight the positive things we’re doing both in and out of work. In fact, if you’re not following Carilion on our accounts, we hope you’ll give us a “like” or a “friend request” soon! (We’re on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and on Facebook as Carilion Clinic and Carilion@Work). Our Social Media policy is there to help us enjoy our time on social media while protecting ourselves, our organization and the patients and communities we serve.
