Telehealth Update: Flexibilities Extended Through September 2025
Congress has passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to extend telehealth flexibilities through Sept. 30, 2025. Telehealth flexibilities refer to the ability to provide healthcare services remotely. This extension ensures Medicare beneficiaries will have continued access to virtual care.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, key provisions were implemented allowing Medicare beneficiaries to continue accessing telehealth services without disruptions—including the ability to receive care from their homes, expanded eligibility for providers delivering telehealth, and the continued use of audio-only visits where appropriate.
The CR to extend telehealth flexibilities will continue the key provisions and also includes the changes below.
Additional qualified clinician types were approved to deliver telehealth services:
Temporary Eligible
- Occupational therapists
- Physical therapists
- Speech-language pathologists
- Audiologists
Permanently Eligible
- Physicians
- Physician assistants
- Nurse practitioners
- Clinical nurse specialists
- Nurse-midwives
- Certified registered nurse anesthetists
- Clinical psychologists
- Clinical social workers
- Registered dietitians or nutrition professionals
- Marriage and family therapists
- Mental health counselors
The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program expanded model flexibilities, including virtual delivery. Coverage for that program is extended through Dec. 31, 2027.
Expanded and in-home cardiopulmonary rehabilitation services remain expired.
