Plan Ahead for Children's Physicals and Immunizations

Whether it's for summer camps, sports or even back-to-school, Carilion Children's is encouraging parents and caregivers to schedule their children's well-checks, sports physicals and immunizations now. The end of the current school year is in sight and summer is upon us; it’s never too early to plan!

Why the Rush?

Last year, our general pediatric clinics experienced a backlog of appointments that caused some children to delay the start of the school year.

The vaccination schedules for students are set by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and must be met in order for children to start school.

Encouraging family, friends and neighbors to schedule an appointment now will ensure their child is ready to begin their summer fun or the new school year on time. The VDH offers details about each vaccine in a downloadable Supplemental Guidance sheet (pdf). 

What Are the Options?

There are several ways children can get their well-checks, sports physicals and immunizations.

  • They are available by appointment with our pediatricians and primary care providers. 

  • All of our VelocityCare locations offer sports physicals with limited immunizations, no appointment needed. Or, you can save a spot and pick a location and time to let us know when you plan to arrive.

  • Our Adolescent Health Clinic cares for patients age 10 to 26 and has appointments available; call 540-769-0975 to schedule.

  • Our Adolescent Health clinics at Patrick Henry and William Fleming high schools are another option for Roanoke City students. 

  • Roanoke City Public School students can also visit the LIFT Center at Fallon Park Elementary School for pediatric medical care needs. Services are available weekdays with a nurse navigator and nurse practitioner on site. 

Sports Physicals Event for Middle and High School Athletes

Middle and high school athletes who need pre-season sports physicals can attend our one-day event Saturday, May 18 in Roanoke.

Our Sports Medicine team will be on hand to conduct sports physicals at the Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences. 

Some schools have pre-registered for a specific time slot. If your school is not already registered, you can register on site for the walk-in clinic at 3 p.m.

A completed VHSL form is required with a parent signature or a parent must be present during registration.

It's important that parents and caregivers remember to bring the required forms to the appointment!
