P: Drive Files Are Moving to OneDrive

Submitted by abshaver on

As part of our work to modernize our technology and strengthen data security, we will move P: drive files to Microsoft OneDrive.

All Carilion employees already have access to OneDrive through your Carilion Microsoft 365 account. Because OneDrive lives in the cloud, it's easier to access, share, and manage work files securely across supported devices.

If you use a P: drive, TSG will move your existing files to OneDrive for you. You do not need to transfer them yourself. Your files will still be available--the only change will be the location where you access them.

The migration will take place in phases and is expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year. You'll receive a TSG Service Alerts email about a week before your department's files are moved.

OneDrive Migration Overview

What Is OneDrive?

OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud-based file storage service, available through your Carilion Microsoft 365 account. Like your current P: drive, OneDrive provides a place to store your personal work files. It also offers several benefits:

  • Improved security: Files are encrypted and protected against data loss, ransomware, and device failure
  • Easier access: Access your files through Microsoft 365 on supported devices, whether you're working on-site or remotely
  • File recovery: Automatic backup and version history make it easier to recover deleted or changed files
  • Simpler collaboration: Securely share files and control who can view or edit them

What You Need to Do

Although TSG will handle the migration, there are steps you can take to prepare.

  • Review your P: drive files. Remove files you don't need anymore, such as those that are outdated, duplicate, or not work-related. Follow applicable records retention requirements.
  • Start using OneDrive. Begin saving new personal work files in OneDrive instead of your P: drive. You can access OneDrive by signing in to Microsoft 365 with your Carilion account and selecting the OneDrive application.
  • Check your work processes. Identify applications, shortcuts, or tasks that depend on files stored on your P: drive.
  • Report potential disruptions. Consider what work you couldn't complete if your P: drive were unavailable. Report concerns to the Technology Service Center.

What Happens During and After Migration?

TSG will move your existing P: drive files to OneDrive.

Once your migration is complete, you'll need to confirm that your files are available and working as expected. Check that your important files and folders are there, open a few documents, and test any shortcuts or applications that previously used your P: drive.

You'll have time to review your files and report problems after the migration before your P: drive is retired.

What About Shared Drives?

We will move shared drive files to OneDrive at a future date after P: drives have been moved. We'll share more information once that timeline has been determined.

We are moving P: drive files to Microsoft OneDrive.

TSG will automatically move your existing files--you don't need to do anything. You'll receive advance notice about a week before your files are migrated.

You can prepare by reviewing the files in your P: drive and deleting anything you don't need anymore.

We'll provide updates on this page throughout the project.
