New Interim Chair for Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Jonathan Carmouche, MD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, effective Jan. 1, 2026, when Joseph Moskal, MD, concludes his service as chair. 

After joining the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center in 1988, Dr. Moskal has been a steadfast leader in our community. In 2010 he led the integration of the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center and Carilion Bone and Joint to form and head the section of Orthopaedic Surgery at Carilion Clinic. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2014. Under his leadership, our Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosciences was formed, and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has grown from 9 surgeons to 50 physicians covering all subspecialties in orthopaedics, making it the largest academic orthopaedic surgery practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his tenure, the department has also started an orthopaedic residency program, a podiatry residency, and six distinct fellowship programs. 

Dr. Carmouche is a highly respected orthopaedic spine surgeon and has been a long-standing innovative leader within our organization, having practiced in Roanoke for more than 18 years.   

He currently serves as vice chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, vice chair for Research for the Virginia Tech Carilion Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, section chief of Spine Surgery, Scoliosis, Pediatric Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, interim section chief of Orthopaedic Trauma, and chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at CRMH. Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated a collaborative leadership style that is deeply focused on supporting our care teams and advancing our collective mission. 

He earned his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency and a research fellowship at the University of Rochester.  He then went on to fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Scoliosis and Spine Surgery at The Twin Cities Spine Center and later earned an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. He serves as professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, reflecting his commitment to education, innovation, and developing the next generation of clinicians. 

Dr. Carmouche is known for his integrity, strategic thinking, and ability to bring people together to solve complex challenges. He has been recognized with numerous local and national awards throughout his career and has contributed extensively to the field through peer-reviewed publications and academic scholarship. His dedication to patient care, research, and team development makes him exceptionally well suited to guide the department during this transition.
