New Chair of Pediatrics Hired
After a national search, Andrew Herman, MD, has been hired to chair the Department of Pediatrics for Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He will arrive in June.
Dr. Herman comes from Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C. where he worked as vice president and chief medical officer for Levine Children’s Hospital and Jeff Gordon Children’s Center. In this role for 10 years, Dr. Herman helped build a robust and successful quality and safety program with top rankings in the U.S. News and World Report Best Children’s Hospital survey.
A practicing neonatologist, he was instrumental in helping deliver high-quality care across Atrium’s pediatric services, delivering new quality initiatives and working to enhance hospital processes to reduce length of stay and improve neonatal outcomes. Dr. Herman has also held academic appointments at Carolinas Medical Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Charlotte Campus and Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He attended Indiana University, earned a medical degree from Saint Louis University, and completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Herman will succeed Christopher Pierce, MD, interim chair of Pediatrics, who has led the team since 2022.

He succeeds Dr. Christopher Pierce, interim chair of Pediatrics.
