National Weather Service Issues Alerts for Severe Weather

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch alert for parts of Southwest Virginia and Central Virginia until 2 p.m. this afternoon.  

It’s important to regularly monitor NWS alerts for tornado watches and warnings and be aware of where you plan to go when severe weather occurs. The best source of information regarding weather alerts will be from the NWS alerts that ping phones based on their location, giving you real-time alerts for severe weather in your area.  

Tornado Reminders: 

In the event of a warning: 

• Close blinds. 
• Close doors, if appropriate.  
• Move to interior areas of the building. 
• Keep away from windows. 
• Do not go to large open rooms. 
• Keep a radio or phone close to monitor for alerts. 

An official weather watch indicates an increased probability of severe weather developing and encourages preparation for the potential extreme weather event.   

An official weather warning refers to severe weather that has already developed or is nearly guaranteed to develop. It requires action to protect yourself and those around you.
