Introducing Our Newest Value: Collaboration!
At the annual Carilion Shine Awards ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, our President and CEO Nancy Howell Agee had some exciting news to deliver. With some help from the Glenvar Marching Band, she unveiled our new value, Collaboration!
Our New Value and What It Means
Collaboration is working together with purpose to achieve shared goals—and we’ve been doing it for a long time. Whether it’s through partnerships with each other, between departments or with organizations and individuals in the community, collaboration is a long-standing trait of Carilion and has been the thread that is woven through all that we do to fulfill our mission.
Because Collaboration reflects the many ways we operate and who we are today, it only makes sense that it should be one of our values.
To be sure we are applying Collaboration to our work, there are specific examples to keep in mind. For Collaboration, we can:
- Listen, so everyone has a voice.
- Be open to new ideas and different perspectives.
- Use and respect all talents and experiences.
- Support others to achieve greater success together.
- Embrace opportunities and alliances to build connections that fulfill our mission.
As we introduce Collaboration as one of our five core Carilion Clinic values—along with Commitment, Compassion, Courage and Curiosity—CommUNITY becomes our north star, because it’s more than a value. CommUNITY is at the heart of our mission and is ingrained in all of our values.
A Recommitment to All Our Values
An organization's core values are intended to identify its character, guide its actions and set it apart from the competition. However, for many organizations, their values are simply words in an employee handbook or discussed at orientation, never to be seen or used again.
Not for us. Our values are truly who we are. We live our values daily and rely on them to steer us as we grow.
As we now add Collaboration to our values and deliberately make it part of how we work better together, let’s not forget our other five values. This is the perfect time to recommit to living them even better.
