Interim Chair of Pediatrics Dr. Christopher Pierce to Retire

After a medical career that spans nearly 30 years, Dr. Christopher Pierce, interim Chair of Pediatrics, is retiring on May 16.

Dr. Pierce joined Carilion in 2001 as a general pediatrician before transitioning to Chief of General Pediatrics in 2017 and was named interim Chair in 2022.

Chris has been instrumental in much of the growth and transition in our pediatric department over the years. He helped establish Carilion Children’s Tanglewood Center, led care teams through the pandemic and oversaw the growth of our pediatric specialty offerings and clinics across southwestern Virginia. He also was active in establishing the presence of Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in the outpatient pediatric offices and developing curriculum for the next generation of physicians. Most importantly, Chris delivered high quality, compassionate care to hundreds of children, watching many of them grow into adults.

He attended Virginia Tech, earned his medical degree at University of Virginia, and completed his internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital.

Dr. Andrew (Drew) Herman from Atrium Health at Carolinas Medical Center will Chair the Department of Pediatrics when he arrives in June.

"Chris’ focus was always on the health and well-being of our pediatric patients, and he worked continuously to ensure that as many children as possible would have access to comprehensive, quality care," says Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Dr. Tony Seupaul and Dean Learman of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. "He will be greatly missed, but we wish him the best in his retirement."
