Honoring Our Veterans With Specialized Hospice Care
Carilion Hospice in Franklin County was featured on WSLS Channel 10 for the specialized care they provide to veteran hospice patients through We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
New River Valley and Roanoke Hospices are also active partners in the program developed to offer care that specifically addresses the needs of veterans at the end of life.
Hospices that obtain We Honor Veterans star designation must meet strenuous requirements for staff and volunteer training, community outreach, Vet-to-Vet volunteering and other tasks.
There are eight Level 5 We Honor Veterans hospices in the state of Virginia and two of them are Carilion Clinic Hospices: New River Valley and Franklin. The NRV Hospice was the first hospice in Virginia to receive Level 5 designation and both NRV and Franklin Hospices are national mentors for Level 5 status.
