Help Bring Life-Saving Kidney Transplant Services to Our Region

In January, we submitted a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) application to the state to launch a kidney transplant program. If approved, CRMH would house Southwest Virginia's only transplant program.  

There are currently over 2,300 residents on Virginia’s waitlist for kidneys and about 5,000 people in our region with kidney disease. The numbers of people with kidney disease continue to increase locally, regionally and nationally.   

“There is a huge need to offer these life-saving services close to home for our communities,” said David Salzberg, M.D., the surgeon who would lead the program. “In keeping with our mission, this program will help us improve the health of the communities we serve by improving access to care for patients who travel hours to reach the nearest transplant center.”  

Ultimately, the Virginia Division of COPN will decide, and community support will play a significant role.  

We will appeal to key community leaders, organizations and the public for support.
