Groundbreakers: Organizational Changes
Dan Harrington, M.D., has been hired as our interim chief medical officer. He will begin this new role on Nov. 14 and will report to President and CEO Nancy Howell Agee.
Many of you know Dr. Harrington. He served our graduate medical education (GME) program as was vice president and professor and vice dean for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. During his career, Dr. Harrington played a crucial role in the formation of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine as well as our academic department of Psychiatry. Among his many accomplishments, he supervised the expansion of our GME program, resulting in the establishment of many residencies and fellowships and the creation of the research, simulation and professional development departments for our organization.
Dr. Harrington will oversee our robust multi-specialty physician group of more than 1,000 physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
“Dan already knows Carilion inside and out and he will help us improve quality, the patient experience and clinical excellence throughout our health system,” said Nancy.
In the meantime, we’re continuing our search for a chief physician executive; note that we’ve adjusted the position title to better reflect the systemwide role the individual will play.
