Giving in Action: Bringing Advanced Cardiac Training to Our Teams
Every day, generosity helps make a difference across our organization—providing our teams with new resources, creating opportunities for education and ultimately helping us provide better care for our patients and communities.
The impact of that giving can be seen in action at the Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) at CRMH, where donations to the Cardiovascular Care, Innovation and Education Fund recently made it possible to purchase two interactive heart simulator devices, known as CoraSim.
Designed for training and education in cardiac electrophysiology procedures, CoraSim provides healthcare professionals with hands-on experience using external pacemakers as well as the associated diagnostic and treatment techniques. The CoraSim devices are compatible with a variety of pacemaker types and can replicate different cardiac arrhythmias, allowing users to practice responding to realistic clinical scenarios in a controlled environment.
Charles Bullins, APP manager and fellowship director for Cardiothoracic Surgery, believes the technology will strengthen staff education while enhancing patient care.
"We are grateful to the donors who support the Cardiovascular Care, Innovation and Education Fund," said Bullins. "Their generosity has enabled us to purchase these devices and provide hands-on training opportunities that otherwise would not be possible."
More than 800 of our employees are expected to use the simulators each year, including nurses, fellows and clinical administrators from across the health system. In addition to supporting staff education, the devices will be incorporated into continuing medical education (CME) programs offered by Carilion Clinic for healthcare professionals throughout the region.
Continuing medical education is a critical component of maintaining medical licensure and certification and helps ensure clinicians remain current with evolving technologies and best practices. By offering realistic, hands-on training with emerging cardiac devices, CoraSim will help our teams and healthcare professionals in the region build confidence, advance clinical expertise, and ultimately improve patient safety and outcomes.
Giving makes opportunities like this possible.
Our Carilion Cares, I Care employee giving campaign runs Oct. 1 – 31, giving each of us an opportunity to support the programs and areas that are meaningful to us. Whether a gift helps provide innovative training equipment, supports our patients and families or strengthens another area of our organization, every contribution makes an impact.
CoraSim is one example of what that generosity can look like in action. When we give, we invest in one another, in the work we do and in the communities we serve.
