Family and Community Medicine Chair to Retire

Dr. Michael Jeremiah, senior vice president and chair of the department of Family and Community Medicine, will retire on Dec. 27.

Dr. Jeremiah has been with Carilion since 1995. He previously served as the medical director for the family medicine residency program for 12 years and has included care and teaching services in the hospital, Labor & Delivery and ambulatory settings.

He became chair of the department in 2012. Under his leadership, the department has grown to more than 300 clinicians and integrated seven new primary care sites, bringing the total to more than 43 locations spread over 250 miles. He co-led efforts to convert 17 sites to Rural Health Clinic status and created the department’s Virtualist Division to make visits easier for patients.

Dr. Jeremiah also served as the senior medical director of Population Health and as the president of its Accountable Care Organization (ACO) – “Doctor’s Connected.” In these roles, he supported many initiatives to help close gaps in care, reduce avoidable costs and improve access across all departments.
