If you have old computers, printers, tablets, phones, power cables or other unused electronics, now's your chance to properly recycle them.

A drive-through electronics recycling event will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon at 901 Plantation Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Improperly disposing of electronic waste can contaminate soil, air and water, leading to health concerns such as cancer.

In partnership with River Acceptance, a local electronics recycler, all proceeds from recycled materials will help fund bike parking areas at Carilion to encourage environmentally conscious commuting.

“Last time we were in Blacksburg, we collected approximately 13,714 pounds of electronics from 186 cars,” said Marina Sotelo, sustainability manager. “This amounted to $1,628 raised for the cancer center, and we’re excited to raise funds again while giving our communities a safe way to dispose of their electronics.”

A full list of accepted items is available on the event page. Items not accepted include:

• Cathode ray tube televisions or monitors
• Household appliances (refrigerators, microwaves, crockpots, etc.)
• Lightbulbs
• Printer cartridges
• Alkaline batteries

Volunteer opportunity

Help make a difference by volunteering at our upcoming electronics recycling event in Blacksburg. Volunteers can sign up for 2-hour shifts to assist with collection, traffic flow and logistics—no experience needed.
