Dr. Mark Greenawald Named Interim Chair of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Mark H. Greenawald will serve as the interim chair of the department of Family and Community Medicine. He will step in after Dr. Michael Jeremiah retires on Dec. 27 and will remain in the role until a permanent replacement is hired.

Dr. Greenawald has served as vice chair of Academic Affairs, Well-being and Professional Development in the department of Family and Community Medicine for more than 10 years. He joined Carilion in 1995 after serving five years as a naval medical officer and has held multiple clinical and academic leadership roles over the years, including founding chair of the department of Family Medicine at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Dr. Greenawald also serves as medical director for the Institute for Leadership Effectiveness and has made physician well-being and leadership development a cornerstone of his responsibilities.  He will continue in this work during his interim tenure.
