Chief Medical Information Officer Dr. Steve Morgan to Retire

Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer Steve Morgan, MD, has made the decision to retire in March.  

Dr. Morgan joined Carilion in 1996 after 6 years in private practice and quickly became a trusted leader within Family and Community Medicine, serving as a Regional Medical Director for more than a decade. Early in his career, he recognized the potential of technology to improve both the quality of patient care and physician efficiency and began his work as a physician champion for Information Technology in 1999. 

In 2010, Dr. Morgan transitioned from full-time clinical practice into informatics and IT, where he was appointed Carilion’s first Chief Medical Information Officer. In that role, he provided executive leadership for clinical informatics, digital health, data analytics, and research reporting. He guided major initiatives such as systemwide implementation of our Electronic Health Record, data governance, and the use of analytics to transform care delivery. 

A board-certified family physician, Dr. Morgan earned his undergraduate degree from the Virginia Military Institute and his medical degree from the University of Virginia, completing his residency at CRMH. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply connected to education and mentorship, continuing to see patients and serving as an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. 

Most recently, he was an invaluable voice as an advocate for bringing a kidney transplant program to Carilion. Last year, he established the Ellen Crawford Morgan Transplant Patient Care Endowment in honor and memory of his late wife, Ellen. His efforts will help ensure a legacy of providing vital care to people around our region long after his retirement.
