Changes to Our Video Visit Platform Starting April 21
Beginning Tuesday, April 21, a portion of Carilion’s telehealth services will transition from the Amwell video visit platform to Epic Video Client.
What's Changing
Epic Video Client will be used for:
- Scheduling video visits
- Conducting scheduled ambulatory video visits
Core video visit workflows will be the same, with most improvements occurring behind the scenes within Epic. A Frequently Asked Questions document is available on the Digital Health hub.
No other telehealth services are affected at this time.
What’s Not Changing
The following platforms and workflows will remain the same.
- Acute Care Telehealth (cart-based visits)
- Will continue using Quick Connect
- TytoCare
- No changes for home or clinic use
- No changes to mobile vans
Why We’re Making This Change
Virtual care continues to be a critical part of how we deliver care. As our telehealth services grow, it’s increasingly important to use tools that are fully integrated with Epic, which is our electronic health record. Epic Video Client helps to:
- Streamline workflows
- Reduce technical barriers for staff and patients
- Improve reliability and visit quality
- Provide a more consistent experience across Epic-based care
What Epic Video Client Offers
EVC provides several key advantages, including
- Direct integration with Epic scheduling, documentation, and patient communications
- A simplified workflow for clinicians and support staff
- An easier, more intuitive experience for patients, with fewer steps to join visits
- Improved reliability and less dependence on third-party applications
Looking Ahead
In future phases, CarilionNow on-demand virtual care will transition to a new video visit experience. We will continue to use the Acute Care cart model for hospital telehealth and TytoCare for virtual care scenarios requiring enhanced diagnostic tools.
