Meet Melodie Garcia, Administrative Assistant and Staff Auditor I, Internal Audit

How long have you worked at Carilion?  About 18 years

How does your job contribute to patient care and/or Carilion’s mission?

It's important for us to feel confident in the work we put in, but we all run into challenges that can affect our ability to do our jobs well. I’m starting to see how these obstacles can create risks for us and the organization, whether that's financial, operational or even reputational. I've realized that we all have a key role in supporting Carilion and serving our community in the best way possible.

What is your favorite thing about working here?

Working with others to be a part of positive (lasting) change.

Describe a typical day in your job.

I start with emails and a team huddle to connect with my coworkers and address any roadblocks.  But honestly, after that, every day is different. One day, I’ll help IA’s Senior Director refine a PPT presentation for the Compliance Committee, and the next day, test a business process for an audit.  I love that my job has such diverse responsibilities.

How are you involved in your community outside of work?

I volunteer with a local social advocacy organization.  My parents are both immigrants from countries whose people have faced oppression, both in the past and present. The most important lesson I learned from them is that everyone deserves the freedom to share their story. As members of the global community, it is our responsibility to listen. You’ll discover one common element we all hold dear– family/community.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about you?

I was a bit of a wild child during the mid-late 90s …maybe I'd better leave it at that.

Name someone at Carilion who has had an impact on your career or who has inspired you.

During my 18 years at Carilion, I have been fortunate to work alongside incredible women who are brilliant both in mind and heart. Denise Stewart, the Senior Director of IA, exemplifies intelligence and resilience. Having someone like her in your corner is truly empowering.

What advice do you have for a new employee here?

Ask for help when you need it. You’ll find that most people not only want to succeed but also want to see you achieve that sense of accomplishment as well.
