Breastfeeding Support Available Through New Lactation Services Program
Breastfeeding Support Available for Carilion Families
Breastfeeding is a learning journey, and every family’s experience is different. Carilion Children’s and Carilion Women’s have come together to offer lactation support to help families navigate questions and challenges and reach their individual feeding goals in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Lactation consultants can help with breastfeeding, latching, feeding concerns and more. During an appointment, families can discuss their feeding goals and concerns and receive individualized support. Depending on their needs, a visit may include:
- Breast/nipple and infant oral assessments
- Observation of a feeding to assess positioning, latch and milk transfer
- Support for breast or nipple pain and milk supply concerns
- Pump setup, flange or nipple shield sizing, and milk storage guidance
- Education about pumping, returning to work, weaning, clogged ducts and other common concerns
When additional care is needed, lactation consultants can also help connect families with the appropriate provider, including pediatrics, OB-GYN, primary care, or ENT.
Just as importantly, lactation consultants provide reassurance and encouragement. Counseling is a significant part of their role, helping parents build confidence, work through challenges and make informed decisions that support their individual lactation goals.
What to expect at your appointment
After scheduling their appointment, patients should bring their child to Tanglewood and check in at the registration desk. A lactation consultant will meet them in the waiting area. The visit begins with questions about the parent’s and baby’s medical history, their lactation journey and any concerns they would like to address.
