Are Midwifery Services for You?

Submitted by eapullin on

More than 70% of our workforce is women. Whatever our age, access to routine OB/GYN care is important to our health—and our midwifery services can help.

In the spring we expanded our system's team of certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), and we have been growing ever since!

What Do Midwives Offer?

Many think midwives only assist mothers during home births or that they exclusively support pregnant patients. The truth is, our hospital-based CNMs offer a broad range of services to care for our patients in a variety of ways. From your first gyn appointment through menopause, midwifery provides care for all stages of life.

Adolescent and Gyn Care
First gynecological visits and regular annual screenings are an important part of well-woman care. Our CNMs are available for those appointments and to help educate patients on and prescribe birth control. Patients also have benefitted from the nutrition and lifestyle counseling offered by midwives to support general primary care.

Pregnancy
CNMs can assist in every step of your journey to parenthood—from family planning and prenatal care to childbirth and postpartum support. Any patient, regardless of pregnancy risk level, can consult with a midwife who will refer you to specialists as needed.

Labor and Delivery
CNMs offer a hospital-based approach and provide all options of medication, including epidurals, during labor and delivery. They operate out of a Roanoke hub, with satellite offices in the New River Valley and Rocky Mount and attend hospital-based births at CRMH (Note: 24/7 midwifery coverage at the hospital is a goal for summer of 2025. Now through the spring of 2025, patients are not guaranteed to have a midwife attend their birth.)

Menopause Management and Beyond
Menopause can vary significantly from woman to woman. CNMs offer menopause evaluations to help patients adjust to changes they may be experiencing. CNMs can also help patients manage conditions like painful menstruation and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
