A Dream That Unites Us All: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday and this national holiday. We take time to honor his unwavering dedication to a brighter future— one rooted in racial equality and social justice, which he pursued through peaceful, nonviolent resistance. His landmark I Have a Dream speech in 1963 was a turning point for racial equality, and in 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his profound work.

Dr. King’s influence, however, extends beyond that of a remarkable activist and political philosopher. He was also an extraordinary servant leader, exemplified in his quote above. He spoke these words at Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1957, yet they ring remarkably true today. 

Dr. King believed that lasting change only happens when communities are organized, engaged, and morally committed—through nonviolent action, service, voting, advocacy, and mutual care.

Dr. King embodied the values we strive for every day. He championed what it meant to be compassionate, courageous, and committed. Today and every day, you have the opportunity honor his legacy and serve in your own, unique way. 

As healthcare workers, we naturally embody our mission: to improve the health of the communities we serve. Whether we’re making a patient more comfortable, bringing them meals, prescribing their medication, talking with their family, or carrying out administrative work that supports our organization and staff, we’re serving our patients and community.

Dr. King also said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” 

Small moments have the opportunity to make major changes. Whatever our position or job role, talents or experiences, we all have an opportunity to share in Dr. King’s example—whether we’re at work or volunteering in our communities.
