A Big Carilion Welcome to Our New Residents and Fellows

Our Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency and fellowship programs are an important part of our community. These programs are training the next generation of physicians to serve patients and their families. 

This year, we have 29 new trainees joining us who graduated from Virginia schools, including five graduates of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. It is our hope that upon graduation, these residents will continue to improve the health of our communities by staying in the Commonwealth.        

So, who are our new residents and fellows? They are a diverse group selected to meet the needs of our diverse patient population. Our incoming trainees join us from medical schools and programs all over the country and world. 

After many months of preparation and onboarding, including two weeks of intensive system orientation, our 117 new residents and fellows began their training rotations at hospitals and offices across our organization. They will learn a lot about Carilion, our community and their chosen specialties in the coming months and years. 

Here is a breakdown of our trainees: 

• Twenty-two new fellows 

• Ninety-five new residents

• One hundred seventeen total new trainees 

Many of them have joined us from afar and do not have family close by, so please join us in making our new residents and fellows feel at home by introducing yourself and welcoming them.
