10 Ways To Reduce Energy Use

Reducing energy waste is one of the most effective measures that we can take to cut back on our environmental impact and protect community health. While reducing energy use as a system may sound like an overwhelming task, if all of us start small, our collective efforts can make a big impact.

“Changes in our everyday habits can help reduce Carilion’s energy bills, lower carbon emissions and ease pressure on the power grid,” says Sara Wohlford, director of Sustainability. “Over time, these modest adjustments can yield substantial energy use reduction and cost savings on their own.”

Sara suggests starting small and choosing one or two energy conservation measures to try first. Below is an infographic with suggestions for 10 ways to reduce energy use:

10 Ways To Reduce Energy Use

  1. Turn off TVs in patient rooms, conference rooms and break rooms
  2. Turn lights off
  3. Unplug non-essential devices and equipment when not in use (example: desk lamps, phone chargers, etc.)
  4. Avoid adjusting thermostats outside of appropriate ranges
  5. Remove space heaters
  6. Remove any unused equipment (example: coffee makers or microwaves that are not used)
  7. Remove personal mini-fridges and only use designated staff refrigerators
  8. Report any water leaks to maintenance as soon as possible
  9. Complete the Greening the Office Certification program
  10. Consolidate printers and remove personal printers
